A growing number of states use private military and security companies (PMSCs) for a variety of tasks, which were traditionally fulfilled by soldiers. The controversies raised by the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, the situation in Iraq, and the management of the 'Arab Spring' uprisings have demonstrated anew that achieving peace is not merely a matter of ending wars.
